Imperial helps set the table for new scientists and engineers with contribution to Calgary tutoring program

October 04, 2024

Calgary, Alberta – October 4, 2024 – Imperial is investing $400,000 to help expand a tutoring program for local high school students. The Tutoring Table program, which is part of the United Way’s All in for Youth initiative, is delivered by the YMCA to vulnerable youth ages 14-21. The company’s donation will be used to create a dedicated science tutoring stream and expand the capacity of the program.

"Imperial has always believed in the power of education to transform lives,” says Brad Corson, Imperial’s chairman, president and CEO. “We’re excited to continue our partnership with United Way and further invest in the All In for Youth initiative, particularly in STEM learning. By supporting the next generation of scientists, engineers and innovators, we are investing in Calgary’s future."

Through the leadership and partnership of YMCA Calgary, the Tutoring Table program began in 2013, aiming to provide hands-on support for students, ensuring they succeed in the classroom and develop a lifelong passion for learning. The program is offered in 12 locations around the city as well as online, allowing kids with financial and academic challenges to enhance their confidence in problem-solving. In 2023, more than 600 students accessed tutoring support; since its inception, more than 5,600 students have participated. Volunteers also act as positive role models and mentors, often providing students with career advice, personal experience and knowledge.

"Imperial has been a transformational partner for more than three decades and their continued support for All In for Youth is truly remarkable,” says Karen Young, president and CEO of United Way of Calgary and Area. “This new investment will not only enhance academic outcomes for students but will also inspire youth to pursue careers that will shape the future of Calgary. Together, we are building a community where every young person has the opportunity to thrive."

As the demand for STEM skills continues to grow in today’s world, it is essential to equip young people with the knowledge and tools they need to succeed. Karla Heintz, manager of children and youth initiatives at United Way, recognizes the importance of Imperial’s role in advancing youth development.

“The Tutoring Table program provides students with critical support in subjects like math and science,” says Heintz. “With Imperial’s support, we’ll be able to reach even more youth, giving them the confidence and skills they need to pursue careers in STEM fields. This investment will have a lasting impact on our community."
